Do you remember Nancy Pelosi's visit to the Middle East, back in April, when she dutifully wore a head scarf to show her respect for Islam?
We ran across a copy of one of those photos recently and had to ask whether she would wear a scarf to her own church. After all, St. Paul and the Koran both advocate the subjugation of women. We refer you to Paul's First Letter to Timothy:
2:9In like manner, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefastness and sobriety; not with braided hair, and gold or pearls or costly raiment; 2:10but (which becometh women professing godliness) through good works. 2:11Let a woman learn in quietness with all subjection. 2:12But I permit not a woman to teach, nor to have dominion over a man, but to be in quietness. 2:13For Adam was first formed, then Eve; 2:14and Adam was not beguiled, but the woman being beguiled hath fallen into transgression: 2:15but she shall be saved through her child-bearing, if they continue in faith and love and sanctification with sobriety.
Readers old enough to recall the Catholic church pre-Vatican II will also recall when the Roman Church, took this passage to heart - before Vatican II women were once REQUIRED to cover their heads in Catholic churches. Discarding this restriction was one of the reforms of Vatican II and was hailed as evidence that the Roman Church had entered the modern age.
Which leaves us bemused:
Why would a modern, educated, liberated woman willingly submit to a custom her entire culture has rejected?
Is Ms. Pelosi a religious conservative who routinely wears a scarf to church?
Is Ms. Pelosi so naive that she believes that extremists will leave us alone if we pander to them by showing token respect for their customs?
